February Small Business Spotlight

11/02/12 COMMENTS 0

Full-time career, full- time studies and small business owner… whoever said that it can’t be done has not met this enthusiastic young woman.  Our Small Business Spotlight owner of this month, Ibi Opuiyo, is the poster child for what she calls “practical approach success”. While balancing studies at the University of Houston-Victoria Business School, Opuiyo has also recently concluded an award winning Clinical Safety and Effectiveness project at MD Anderson Cancer Center which allowed her department to increase access to patients requiring diagnostic exams. Her passion for process improvement and initiatives promoting safety and efficiency in healthcare, has recently earned her a scholarship from the British Medical Journal to attend the upcoming International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare in Paris. In addition to being room mother for her lovely daughter’s 7th grade class and serving as Outreach Coordinator and website developer for her church’s Young Adult Ministry, Opuiyo has also been strategically managing the development of her small business, CPR Time, which offers CPR training and certification in Fort Bend County.

Her business philosophy is to be practical…balance the risks involved, whether it be time, capital, acquisition of knowledge and skill, or all of the above. Maximize your opportunities to learn and continually evaluate your motives for going into business. You are not only going into business for yourself, but into commerce.  ”My goal with my business is to simply offer great service at the greatest convenience and best value for my customers.”

National Urban League’s Legislative Policy Centennial Conference

11/02/12 COMMENTS 0

National Urban League’s 9th Annual Legislative Policy Centennial Conference
“Employment and Education Empower the Nation”
March 6-8, 2012
The Liaison Capitol Hill, An Affinia Hotel
415 New Jersey Avenue, NW
Washington, DC.

This year’s LPC is designed to make sure that our Nation’s leaders know exactly who the 98 affiliates and 2.6 million clients of the National Urban League are and what we are doing to make a difference in the communities that they were elected to serve. It will provide you with opportunities to not only engage in a “rolled-up sleeves” conversation with key staff at important federal agencies but to participate in both an exhibit hall and panel conversations that will re-introduce – and in some cases introduce – NUL’s work to staffers on the Hill.

Once again, this conference will provide you with the opportunity to take your stories and your demands directly to your elected officials as we bring in key decision-makers to speak with you through our Conversation with the Leaders series, Congressional Black Caucus Awards Breakfast, and Congressional Awards Reception. As with last year’s program, we will conclude the conference with the release our State of Black America 2012 report followed by a spirited town hall conversation with high-profile commentators and students at Howard University.

HAULYP will support the City of Houston along with other local organizations to protect our local parks on Arbor Day. The focus of Arbor Day is to begin a multi-year effort called Re-Plant Houston dedicated to reforesting Houston parks devastated by the drought of 2011.  Our city parks enhance the quality of urban life throughout the city. Arbor Day volunteers will be setup at four parks, including MacGregor Park in the Third Ward community and Memorial Park, where HAULYP will participate in replanting trees to help restore the parks.

Please register to participate via http://teamhaulypforarborday.eventbrite.com by this Thursday, January 19th.

For more information regarding Arbor Day, visit http://www.houstontx.gov/parks/arborday.html. If you have any questions regarding the upcoming project, contact communityoutreach@haulyp.org.
