The Houston Area Urban League (HAUL) is offering scholarships to young adults seeking a short term occupational skills certificate from a community college of their choice. Upon completion, HAUL will work with participants to find employment and track them for a year to ensure they have all the soft-skills needed to maintain employment.

Requirements:

  • Participants must be 18 to 21 years old, out of school and unemployed
  • Living in a home with the head of house receiving some kind of government assistance (SNAP/TANIF/SSI etc.), receiving assistance personally or family income meets WIA qualifications. Must have check stubs for last 20 pay periods to prove income.
  • Must have picture ID, social security card and birth certificate
  • Must have one youth barrier (pregnant teen, struggling reader, run away, felony, etc.)

Whitney M. Young Leadership Conference

Whitney M. Young conference helps develop the capacity and effectiveness of non-profit leaders and their staff. The conference is named for former executive director of the National Urban League, Whitney M. Young Jr., under whose leadership the Urban League Movement grew from 63 to 98 affiliates; its professional staff increased from 300 to over 1200, its budget increased tenfold; the equality symbol was adopted as the League’s logo and board membership expanded to include youth under-thirty years of age.
